who is toast? . . .

(sung to the tune of "Paul Revere" by the Beastie Boys)

Here's a little story I've got to tell,
about a short crazy cracker you know so well.

It was 15 years ago in history,
on WRPI up near Albany.

There was a little DJ who was from the east coast,
he was always burnt so they named him Toast.

He didn't like the name & he didn't have a choice,
but soon the fine young ladies spoke that sexy voice.

"Wow DJ Toast I heard you rockin' on the air,
I'd like to ____ your ____ if you don't ___ in my hair."

Pretty soon after, Toast was getting the praise,
for selling mad records with the songs that he plays.

With no urban station he has the market locked tight,
gives the audience what they want every Friday night.

The industry said:
"DJ Toast, man, you really rock well,
but we don't like your attitude, you can go to hell!"

He said:
"I'm not like you & I think that's funny,
cuz I do it for the love and NOT for the money!"

frequently asked questions . . .

Here are the answers to questions I get asked often. Please don't ask me again.

Toast is a pretty stupid name. Why don't you have a cool DJ name like Grand Master Funkmaster Wizard Cool or some shit like that?

Before I was on the radio, I was given (i.e. assigned) the name Toast. I used to smoke weed a lot back when I was younger and had no responsibilities and a ton more fun. They said I was always burnt (weeded) so they called me Toast. Then I started doing my rap show on WRPI and more people knew me as Toast than any other name so the name stuck. I didn't get to choose my name, it was given to me by others. OK?

My Mom used to listen to you when she was a kid. How long have you been on the radio?

I did my first rap radio show on WRPI back on Jan. 15, 1989. My show started out on Tuesday nights at midnight. I left for Boston for a year back in 1992, and then came back. I have been on Friday nights ever since I came back.

I live in (insert far away city name here) and I can't get your show on my radio. How can I listen?

WRPI broadcasts over the internet in Real Audio. My show is Friday nights from 9pm to Midnight eastern time. You can listen through this link.

How much money do you make at WRPI for doing your show?

We make a shit-load of money at WRPI. Why do think we have the best DJ's in the area? We make a ton more than those poor $9 per hour DJ's at Jamz 96.3! Actually we don't get paid at all at WRPI. We have no commercials to play, so we have no money to make. All the DJ's at WRPI do it for the love of the music. That is why I have been lugging my equipment to the station every Friday night for more than a decade. Plus since we don't get paid, we don't get forced to play any music that we don't like. We get to play what we want, including songs with curse words in them.

Why do you get to play the unedited/dirty versions of the songs?

WRPI is a non-commercial station. The FCC ruled that non-commercial stations can play these types of songs after 10pm. So before 10pm I have to play the clean/edited versions, and then after 10pm I can go buck-wild!

How did a corny white guy like yourself get into rap music back in the 80's?

I got into rap music when I grew up in Boston. I heard Run DMC & Grandmaster Flash and it got me hooked. When I came to RPI to go to college, I met Mr. Alwayz Chill of the Rap Scene radio show when he brought Big Daddy Kane to the RPI campus for a concert. That got me into the radio station and I got my own show, which continues today.

I have the hottest songs ever made and I am going to blow up! Why don't you play my shit?

Because I don't have your shit. If I did, and it was as hot as you say, I would be playing it. If you want me to play your stuff, send it to me. I will listen to it, and if I like it, I will play it. You can mail me vinyl or CD's, or email me an MP3 file of your song(s). Go to the contact info page for more information.

Where is the WRPI radio station located? I want to stop and see you.

The station is located 4 blocks west of none-of-your-business! Do you think I want you down here taking all my beer and strippers?

Do you really have beer and strippers down at the station?

Alcohol is against the FCC rules, as well as WRPI station rules, but strippers are always welcome.

Why don't you ever play any songs by (insert favorite artist here)?

I get this question often. For some people I don't ever play enough Aesop Rock, or Master P, or Goodie Mob, or 50 Cent. I only get 3 hours per week to play the songs I want to play. I am not going to waste 4 minutes of that time playing a song I don't like. Sorry.

What are your favorite rap groups and albums?

These are listed on the gotta have 'em page.

What ever happened to (insert name here) who used to be at WRPI?

Who?

What is your Zodiac sign?

Like Jesus, I am a Capricorn. Who really cares anyway?

Didn't I see you on the TV news when Biggie got killed?

Yes, when both Tupac and Biggie were killed, I got calls from the local TV news stations to talk about them. They filmed me down at the station and aired it as part of their newscast.
